Are alpha and beta carbohydrate epimers always opposite absolute configurations (R/S)?

Hi Anna,
Yes, but definition, alpha and beta anomers are defined by the configuration at the anomeric carbon, and thus alpha has an opposite configuration at that anomeric stereocentre from beta.
