Hi!

Just wondering if chemiosmotic coupling in the ETC is considered secondary active transport. Can't find the answer to this anywhere!

Thanks!

Hi,

Good question.

The definition of secondary active transport is that you use the favorable electrochemical gradient of one ion to transport another ion across a membrane against its electrochemical gradient.

What chemiosmotic coupling is is the coupling of favourable chemical reactions to the transport of an ion against its electrochemical gradient.

As a result, I wouldn't really call it active transport but more the establishment of a gradient.

I guess if I was pushed in a question to call it primary active transport or secondary active transport I would choose secondary active transport, because that is what it most closely resembles. However, I do consider it its own thing to the best of my knowledge.

I hope this helps!
