Hello,

I'm wondering for question 15, in the Altius FL2 Chem/Physics section, how can you tell if oxidation or acetylation is the better answer choice?

The explanation talked about how the carbonyl provides more free electrons, but wouldn't it just be 4 lone electrons on an oxygen? I'm confused because the N-acetyl-p-aminophenol that didn't have any affects would also have the 4 lone electrons on the oxygen even though it is a hydroxy group.

Plus, the passage didn't discuss acetylation nor oxidation. So, how do you conclude that it is oxidation?

Thanks!!

Hi Nicole,

Yes, there is a really tough question because the passage doesn't provide with you much at all.

I would instead use general knowledge: we know that ANTIOXIDANTS are healthy for us to consume. Therefore, anything that produces OXIDATION in the body is bad. It's a very simple to look at the problem, but that's the way that I would approach it.

I hope that helps.
