Hi,

How can you tell from the passage information that if compound 2 were to be added first and then compound 1 is added later, then that would make the apoptosis result go completely as if compound 2 were alone?

I thought that regardless of which would be added first, as long as both compound 1 and 2 are there, it would produce an effect characteristic to both. Rather than being characteristic to compound 2 alone (if compound 2 is added first).

How do you piece together the information from the passage to infer the conclusion that compound 1 needs to be added first?

Thanks!

Hi Nicole,

On my AAMC FL3 CP Q24, the question talks about glucose interconverting between open-chain and closed-ring form. Are we looking at the same test? Can you double check that you have the correct question labelled?

Thanks!

Katrina

Got it! 😀

This passage is really really tricky. The key information is in the 3rd paragraph.

First, we want to add a compound that will INHIBIT the degradation of IKB -- in other words, a compound that will prepare cells for chemotherapy. Compound 1 does this.

Then, we want to add a chemotherapeutic agent: Compound 2.

So, add Compound 1 THEN add Compound 2. Prep for chemotherapy, wait a bit, THEN add chemotherapy.

To ensure that the cells are all first exposed ONLY to Compound 1, and therefore "prepped for chemotherapy", we should only expose them to Compound 1, and then wait a bit.

It's like swabbing an arm with alcohol... waiting a few seconds... and then taking a blood sample. You don't take the blood sample AND swab the arm at the same time.
