The After Class Questions set 1 passage 10 question 59:

The question asked: “the product of B-oxidation...”

I chose that acety-CoA (product of B-oxidation) enters the citric acid cycle and is fully oxidized (option B)

However the answer they chose was “ acetyl-CoA is fully metabolized by fermentation” (option D)

And then their reasoning for this answer was “acetyl-CoA is the product of B-oxidation and entry point for the citric acid cycle in the mitochondirial matrix”.

My understanding was that it is pyruvate not acetyl-CoA that enters fermentation. Clarification as to why D is right would be helpful or why B is wrong.

Hi,

Sorry that this question wasn't answered earlier.

The correct answer should be B. (We've corrected it online).

Acetyl-CoA is the product of beta-oxidation and it is the entry point of the citric acid cycle in the mitochondrial matrix.
