How can we differentiate which metabolic processes are anabolic and which are catabolic? All of the pathways seem to be breaking down something to build something up. ie I thought glycolysis was anabolic but Q48 of ICE 3 in the Biology 1 book is leaning towards glycolysis as an anabolic pathway.

Hello,

Anabolic pathways are those that build molecules from smaller molecules and they require the input of energy, while catabolic pathways are those that breakdown molecules and release energy. In glycolysis, we are breaking down glucose into two pyruvate molecules. The pyruvates are converted to acetyl-coa via the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, allowing them to enter the Krebs cycle where they release a lot of energy. An example of an anabolic pathway - where something is built- would be glycogenesis, where glucose molecules are joined together to create the energy storage form, glycogen.
