Hi,

1. Does everything in the environment go into sensory memory?

2. Is what determines whether sensory memory goes into short term memory whether you pay attention to the stimulus/are consciously aware of it?

3. What is the time frame for short/working memory vs long term memory (hours, days, weeks etc.)?

Thank you

1) Only things that you pay attention to and encode will go into your sensory memory. This is why when you ask someone to point out a criminal in a line up they often cannot because they weren't paying close enough attention at the time of the crime and did not encode the person's face.

2) That is correct

3) Usually we define working memory as 10-15 seconds and short term memory as 15-30 seconds. Long term memory is actually anything longer than that!
