Hi, In the CC, on page 159 it says nucleophilicity usually increases down a column of the periodic table (usually with exceptions). So I got that: down column = more nucleophilic.

However, it also says that the basicity/nucleophilicity increases up the column for halides. This is saying something completely different than the last trend.

My question is: Does nucleophilicty increase down a column with the exception of halides (which are backwards)?

Hi,

Essentially yes, halides can be weird though as they are solvent dependant.

We have some longer answers in the post Factors Affecting Sn2 reactivity posted by Oliva, try to check there if you would like a more detailed answer.

Essentially nucleophilic trends can be conflicting and the key is knowing what is the predominant factor when.
