If bond breaking is endothermic, why is catabolism exothermic?

Bond breaking as an act itself requires an energy investment (endothermic). In terms of catabolism however, it is the breakdown of large complex molecules into smaller ones and involves the breakage of often many bonds, and the overall energy result will be exothermic.

Hope that helps, happy studying!

Cheers,

Molly
