Hi all,
I am having trouble with fischer projections. How do you tell which of the projection arms are going back into the page to assign chirality. Also if one of the chiral carbons is R and the other is S is the molecule optically inactive?

Hello,

In a Fischer projection, horizontal lines represent bonds coming out of the plane of the paper and vertical lines represent bonds going behind the plane of the paper (these are the ones pointing at the back essentially).


If you have one molecule in which one carbon is R and the other is an S, we say that it is optically inactive. In reality, the rotation conveyed by one carbon is outdone by the other which is of the opposite configuration.
