Hi,

on page 17 of lesson 2.1 microbiology in the classroom companion, it says that the presence of lactose can only induce transcription of the lac operon only when glucose is not present. Why does the operon not work when their is glucose?

Hi,

Bacteria love glucose, and so it is their fuel of choice when deciding what to eat. The purpose of the lac operon is to consume lactose to fill its energy needs when there is nothing else available.

If glucose is present however, than the bacteria doesn't need to digest lactose, and therefore does not express the lac operon.
