I was wondering if there is ever a time on the MCAT when we would need to actually use an ICE table to solve for a weak acid/base PH and what that situation would be. The EK textbooks does not even mention them and just skips right to making the Ka equation and solving it while assuming x is negligible in the denominator. Are we likely to see a circumstance where this method won’t work or can we always skip the ICE table?

Usually, the math needed on the MCAT is minimal so often the x is negligible so that we can save time. I would hazard a guess that most of the time you would not have to use an ICE table.

For the off-chance time that you might have to calculate the x, I would flag the question and come back to it, because you're likely to spend more time on the question.
