Hello,

I was wondering which of the two pathways would nuclear membrane proteins be synthesized? Would it be the through the ribosome bound pathway or through the cytosolic/free pathway. I know in class we discussed that nuclear proteins would be synthesized via the cytosolic/free pathway... however I remember a point in one of my undergraduate courses that there could be diffusion of proteins along the RER to the nucleus. Also, there is a point in my CC from last year that membrane proteins are synthesized via the bound pathway except for mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes. So I just wanted to clarify which is correct and which should be assumed for the MCAT.

Have a lovely day

Hi there,

Proteins found in the nucleus (histones, polymerases, regulatory proteins, etc.) are synthesized in the cytosol and then imported into the nucleus. This is a selective import of proteins based on the presence of a nuclear localization signal.

Hope this helps!

Hello again,

Thank you. But what about nuclear membrane proteins such as the phospholipids that are apart of the nuclear envelope?

Have a nice day
