I have a question in regards to question # 76 from passage 12 in the AAMC Biology Q-Pack Vol. 1:
I'm having trouble understanding why the gene encoding UV-reflectance pigment wouldn't be on a Y or sex chromosome if only males have the dewlap. How is the fact that the pigment is expressed in the dewlap, a structure found only in males, not sufficient to conclude that the gene would be on a Y chromosome?

Hi there

Without seeing the question I will give my best explanation.
Just because something is only expressed in males does not mean it is necessarily on the Y chromosome. There are many factors that interact and result in expression of genes including epigenetics, environmental factors, how tightly the chromatin is wound etc. There may be certain epigenetic or environmental factors that cause this trait to only be expressed in males and not females. There for we cannot be sure that it is present on the Y chromosome.
Please let me know if this makes sense or not!
