I was thinking that the answer could be G1 phase because of the checkpoint. So if a cancerous agent acted in this phase to accelerate the movement past the G1 checkpoint, wouldn't this accelerate the cell cycle ?

Hi Josh,

While an agent that bypassed the G1 checkpoint would accelerate the cell cycle, the question specifically indicated that the agent "primarily promoted cell division". The phase of the cell cycle that specifically deals with cell division is the M phase. The rest of the phases assist in growing the cells or with DNA replication.

Hope this helps :)

Right that makes sense. But isn't once you "hit the G1 checkpoint" the cell is guaranteed to divide? So is a method of promoting cell division by getting past the G1 checkpoint rapidly.

I guess this could also be a question of what is a better answer, which is clearly the M phase. So I take it my reasoning is a little "stretching it".

Hi,

Yeah, exactly - its a more direct answer to refer to M phase rather than G1 which would be a bit more convoluted.
