Hi,

Is there any quick way to tell whether a property is a state or path function?

Thank you

Hi,

I would say that most of the time I would have it memorized - for example on the MCAT 99% of the time the path functions are w and q, and everything else tends to be a state function. I also think this is a lower yield sort of topic.

In additoin, distance and frequency don't tend to come up as path functions very often.

Other than that, I guess you would just see if different pathways matter when travelling from initial to final states - for example you can tell heat and work are state functions because it's a pretty notable difference if your battery runs dry because you used your cell phone for too long vs your cell phone catching on fire.

I hope this helps.
