For Question 40 in the C/P section of COVID-5 Altius exam, it asks which element would potentially be substituted for cobalt while maintaining functionality. I recall in an earlier Chem lesson learning that elements in the same column would be more likely to react the same, so I chose the option Rhenium. The options were Sulfur, Copper, Iron, and Rhenium. Iron was the correct choice.

Does this mean that the similar reactivity only pertains to elements that are not part of the transition metals?

This is a bit of a tricky question.

Rhenium is actually not Rh - Rh is Rhodium and Rhenium is Re.

Re is further away than iron is from Cobalt and is not in the same row, so Fe becomes the better answer.

I would recommend keeping in mind the little tricks that exist in the periodic table - for example Thorium vs Thalium and Rhenium vs Rhodium - these can really confuse people that don't know the periodic table as well, as the MCAT will only give you 2 letters on the periodic table and expect you to extrapolate the rest.

On the bright side, a lot of students would also have gotten caught on that type of question (myself included).
