In the biology section of COVID-5 Altius exam, the correct answer for Q41 is "Yes, because glycolysis produces lactic acid". I was under the impression that lactic acid was produced when pyruvate was reduced in fermentation, due to lack of oxygen but out of necessity to replenish NAD+?

Hi Kennedy,

The question stem "muscles that rely exclusively on glycolysis fatigue more quickly than muscles that utilize aerobic respiration" is accurate. This is because if muscles are exclusively relying on glycolysis, a build-up of pyruvate occurs which is then converted to lactic acid. This build up of lactic acid in muscles is the stinging sensation you feel when the muscles are fatigued.

Yes, the fermentation process also helps to produce NAD+ so we can continue to produce ATP for the muscles to use.

So your answer would be yes because glycolysis produces lactic acid (A).

I hope this helps :)
