Hello,

I just quite didn't understand the breakdown of the answer from the answer bank for questions 58 and 60 from Passage 3 on page 276 Classroom Companion.
It is about chiral centres and epimers.

I didn't understand how they derived to the answer choices and how to go about it these questions.

Would you please explain it to me?

Thank you very much,

Best regards,

Anees Crislia Johnson

Hi Anees,

I have attached worked solutions to these problems here.

58: https://ibb.co/tcbxQrf
60: https://ibb.co/k1yw5K8

These questions hinge on the idea that meso compounds are not optically active, and you can spot meso comopounds by the presence of a mirror plane through them.

A way to cut down on the amount of work for this question is to see how you can eliminate extraneous answers - I have tried to provide exmaples of this in my picture where the sample solution is shown.

I hope this helps!
