Hello!

This question asked what the most likely cellular mechanism of aldosterone is, and I thought that it would be B) interaction of a cAMP second messenger system, since messenger systems are used in steroid hormones. The correct answer was C) diffusion into the nucleus followed by activation or repression of one or more genes, because the steroid-receptor complex acts as a transcription factor. This confused me because I thought that steroids cannon diffuse into the nucleus as they are non-polar, negating this answer.

Hello,

Answer choice B, initiation of a cAMP second messenger system, is usually seen with polar hormones that bind to receptors on the cellular membrane which initiate these messenger cascades. Steroid hormones on the other hand have the ability to diffuse into the cell, bind to its receptor, enters the nucleus and regulate the transcription of genes (i.e. they act as transcription factors). Since aldosterone is a steroid hormone, C would be the correct choice.
