Hi,

In the EK Bio 2 book, for ICE 5 question 105, can you please explain why renin would be activated if there is a low concentration of Na+ in the filtrate? Wouldn't renin through aldosterone decrease Na+ concentration further?

Thank you

Luckily this is mentioned in the passage in the second paragraph: "Each of the stimuli that initiates renin release...low rate of NaCl transport across the macula densa of the distal tubule..." Because renin is released, angiotensin II is produced which leads to an increased resistance in efferent arterioles. This eliminates option II (decreased resistance of the efferent arterioles). Also based on the passage, renin decreases resistance of afferent arterioles. Option I is correct (decreased resistance of afferent arterioles). If we combine the change in resistance in both the afferent and efferent arterioles, we reach an increased glomerular filtration rate; this reveals option III as correct (increased glomerular filtration rate). Therefore, answer choice B (I and III only) is the best answer.
Hopefully that helps,
Thank you
