Huckel's Rule

Hi there,

I am just doing my Orgo questions, and am coming across a few asking about aromatic structures/resonances. My questions is that in my notes and in the book it says Huckels rule is 4n+2 = pi electrons where n=any integer including zero. I am wondering what "n" actually is. The carbons or double bonds? If anyone could shed some light that would be great thanks!

"n" is just any integer it does't correspond to anything. For the ring to be aromatic it must correspond with a number that results from Huckel's Rule. For example 4(1) + 2 = 6 so if the ring structure has 6 pi electrons you know its aromatic because that 6 satisfies Huckel's Rule. So numbers 2, 6, 14, 18, 22 etc would all satisfy the rule.

What would be the rule for non-aromatic and anti-aromatic compounds?
