Hi there,

I am a bit confused on how to derive the formula for MA of a hydraulic lift. I understand the formula of MA=W/Fapplied however I am not sure how to use this formula for a hydraulic lift.

Thanks!
Emma

Hi Emma,

The hydraulic lift has 2 forces involved:
The force being applied on the fluid (Fapp)and,
the force of gravity (weight, w) of the object being lifted.

So you can find the mechanical advantage of a hydraulic lift by taking the ratio of those forces:
MA=w/Fapp
