Hello,
I was wondering if you could explain how cardiac output and resistance to blood flow determine blood pressure

Thank you

Hi Sukham,

I unfortunately don't have access to the AAMC question. Could you post the question for context?

Or would you just prefer a more general explanation?

Thanks,

Katt

Hi Katt
A more general explanation is good

Hi Sukham,

"I was wondering if you could explain how cardiac output and resistance to blood flow determine blood pressure."

As far as I understand, similar to current in a circuit, blood pressure (dP), blood flow (Q) and resistance (R) are related by Ohm's law Q = dP/R.

Your cardiac output is going to push some volume of blood out, which will exert some force on the area of your blood vessels, which should result in some pressure. Thus Q and dP are directly proportional.

R will decrease pressure and flow as it is a force resisting this flow/pushing of blood through the vessels. As a result, it is inversely proportional to Q.

Please let me know if this addresses your problem.
