Memorizing types/groups of molecules

Hello,

Passage 3, q.1 in AAMC physical sciences section bank asks us to identify a molecule and its name. It is a modification to a phospholipid with a nitrogenous group attached to the phosphate head. The molecule is called a phosphatide.

Is there a list of molecule names we should be memorizing? I don't think I would have been able to answer this question without memorizing the functional groups present in a phosphatide. Is there anyway I could have come to the conclusion based on reasoning vs. memorization?

Hi,

If you could show me the question (I don't have access to the AAMC exams) I can say more for sure, but generally I would favour knowing IUPAC naming (mostly functional group names) and basic numbering over memorizing molecule types other than those recommended in the CC/EK.

Usually, you should be able to work out naming questions via reasoning and shouldn't have to rely too much on rote memorization.

That being said, I cannot say for sure for this particular question.
