Hi,

For batteries in circuits in physics questions, what is the cathode and the anode? I can't remember if it is different from chemistry or not.

Thank you

Hi Natasha,

Good question! Here's the official definition:
The electrode of a battery that releases electrons during discharge is called anode; the electrode that absorbs the electrons is the cathode.
The battery anode is always negative and the cathode positive. If you're looking for additional details, here's a source I think is pretty helpful: https://batteryuniversit...ng_blocks_of_a_battery#:~:text=Anode%20and%20Cathode,negative%20and%20the%20cathode%20positive.&text=but%20the%20order%20is%20reversed%20with%20lithium%2Dmetal%20batteries.
