Hi,

I attended two biochem 1 lectures and noticed a discrepancy between the # of ATPs produced from one glucose. One prof said net 36 ATP while another said net 32 ATP. Both had different numbers at each level too. I was hoping to get some clarity on which numbers are correct/will be tested on the MCAT!

Hi there,

For the MCAT purposes, please use 36 ATP/glucose (science changed years ago to be 32):
2 NADH (4 ATP in ETC) + 2 ATP for glycolysis. One ATP per NADH is used in transport (so, net 4 ATP, instead of the 6 that should have been made)
2 NADH (6 ATP in ETC) made in prep stage
2 GTP (2 ATP), 6 NADH (18 ATP in ETC), and 2 FADH2 (4 ATP in ETC) made in Krebs Cycle.

Thanks! So per 1 NADH, we create 2 ATP? And per FADH2...how many ATP are created?

Per NADH, there will be 3 ATPs created, except for the NADH created in glycolysis. Only 2 NET will be made. Three is made, but one is required to move the NADH into the inside of the mitochondria to undergo ETC.

As for FADH2., it is 2 ATPs!
