The explanation for the option III seems to contradict the statements so I am kind of confused.

If the REC primarily analyze documents (study proposals) instead of documents used to attract participants, wouldnt that not be supported by the passage. The passage states "study materials are considered: for example, the participants' information sheets, letters inviting people to participate in a study, posters to recruit interviewees in a clinical setting, and any other items submitted"

Hi Brittany - good question! This is definitely a trickier question in this passage.

Answer III requires an understanding of the primary role of the RECs described in the passage. From both the Classroom Companion and the passage, we are told that research ethics committees act to protect the best interest of participants involved in the study.

This is reflected in the passage in the line "The role of each committee is to asses the potential ethical implications of the proposed research as outlined on the application form and the study protocol." Here you can see that the primary emphasis is placed on RECs to review the study protocol (ie. what the participants will be exposed to over the study). While it is true that the REC will also consider other documents (like recruitment materials), the RECs described in the passage primarily are there to analyze the primary documents that impact patient experience in the study. These other materials are not the primary focus for the REC.
