If a question asks about challenging or strengthening a claim (i.e., which of the following is strengthened/weakened by this?), does the claim have to be one that the author made (agrees with) or can it be a claim found in the passage but is a counterpoint to the author’s idea?

For the question "The passage suggests that the author would probably disagree with which of the following statements?", do we always have to assume that the answer is something discussed in the passage?

Thank you

Hello,

These questions are tricky and are often very subjective to the passage (sometimes it will be discussed sometimes not). Often you have to read in between the lines and work on summarizing the key concepts/ message the author is trying to convey to get an overall sense of their opinion and what would agree/disagree with this.

This is a skill that is difficult but will come with time. Just try to practice summarizing at the end of reading the passage or even to start at the end of each paragraph.

Hope this helps and be patient with yourself and this skill!
