I'm a bit confused about the answer to this question: Infusion of which peptide hormone will most likely prevent brain injury in newborn infants exposed to high glucose levels during their fetal development?

The answer says glucagon but isn't glucagon responsible for breaking down glycogen which would release more glucose and increase the blood glucose level even more?

Hey Rose,

The wording of this question was definitely a little tricky. The question is specifically asking about brain injury in newborns who were exposed to high glucose levels during fetal development; that is, prior to their birth. In the last paragraph of the passage, it discusses the need for intervention in such cases to supply the newborn with sufficient glucose to prevent brain injury. The two methods are to either supply exogenous glucose, or to trigger endogenous release, according to the passage. Since we are given peptide hormones to choose from, the best answer in this case would be glucagon, which as you had correctly stated, will assist in the release of glucose into the blood.

Hope that helps, and happy studying!

Cheers,

Molly
