Hi,

I am having trouble with question 44 that asks how many acetyl-CoA and succinyl coA molecules will be made from after beta oxidation of arachidic acid.

The explanation below says succinyl coA is a 3 carbon molecule, but I thought it was a 4 carbon molecule since it is in the Krebs cycle (And has 4 carbons after losing 2 CO2 in previous steps).

Or am I not understanding Kreb's cycle either?

Hi Isabel,

The reason that B is the correct answer is because the only time succinate is produced is when there are an odd number of carbons in the initial molecule. In this case we have 20 carbons in our starting molecule. You can determine how many acetyl Co-A molecules are produced by dividing this by 2. That results in the answer of 10 acetyl CoA molecules and no succinyl CoA molecules. I would agree with you that it should be a 4 carbon molecule, I'm not sure why the answer key says that!
