Passage 10 #55: I understand how we determined the image was virtual (because of the negative focal length so it will be diverging lens), however, I am a little confused how we determined the image will be reduced? Are there just certain rules we have to know to determine when it will be reduced vs enlarged?

Thanks in advance!

The key is the fact that the dude is 68-years-old. Without that, we can't answer the question.

No I'm kidding.

Take a look at pg. 205 in your CC. Since you have a DIVERGING lens, and the object is OUTSIDE the focal length, then the image is VIRTUAL, UPRIGHT, and DIMINISHED. The key word being DIMINISHED.

If you can come up with some handy acronyms to remember these rules (starting around pg. 200), then that will make answering these mirror/lens questions very simple!

See if you can find some patterns in the diagrams that will help you.
