Hello,

I'm a bit confused about which reactants the PCC reagent oxidizes. In the CC book, there is an example given that shows PCC oxidizing a primary alcohol (pg. 181), but then there is a chart a few pages after which states that PCC does not react with primary alcohols (pg. 188). I'm also confused about whether or not PCC reacts with secondary alcohols. Can you please clarify which reactants PCC can oxidize?

Thanks!

Hi Archee!

PCC is a weak oxidizing agent. It's like me when I try to punch something. Very weak. 😎

So, if you apply PCC to something, it'll oxidize it A BIT, but not very much.

Apply PCC to a primary alcohol? You get an aldehyde. But not a carboxylic acid. PCC is too weak. This is consistent with the first line of the chart on pg. 188.

Apply PCC to a secondary alcohol? You get a ketone. Consistent with the second line of the chart.

Apply PCC to an aldehyde? PCC does nothing. Poor PCC. 😫
