Hello,

I'm confused about Question 27 from ICE 2 Passage 1 in the Biology 1 EK book.

First, 5aza-dC is a drug that demethylates and then decreases gene expression of the CD3Z gene. Is this just inferred from the passage/question information?

Second, how can you tell that increased methylation in repressor regions leads to increased expression? Does this happen with all repressor regions? Where does this information come from?

Thanks!

Hi Nicole,

The text for Experiment 2 indicates that 5aza is a demethylating drug.
As for the increased expression, this was derived from the question stem and information from Experiment 2 passage. It states that 5aza is a demethylase, so it decreases methylation.
From the stem, we are told that increased demethylation decreases expression, so in other words, decreased methylation, decreases expression. So, it would stand that D would be the correct answer.

Hope that helps, and happy studying!

Cheers,

Molly
